Micro-chipping is available here at the Animal Health Centre. ISO compatible microchips can be implanted while your pet is awake or while he or she is under general anesthetic during another procedure such as a spay.
Microchipping offers secure, reliable, unique and permanent identification for your pet. This identification number is then linked to you, the owner.
Micro-chipping is not the same as GPS for your pet. Microchips have to be scanned by a scanner to read the information on the microchip. Registered microchips give lost pets the best chance of getting home. They offer a fool proof identification method and a way to re-unite you and your pet. If "Fanny" went missing and turned up at the pound, SPCA or another veterinary clinic, she would be scanned, the microchip number then called into the database and our clinic contact information would come up and we would be called. "Fanny" returned safe and sound.
Only 22% of lost dogs in shelters get returned to their owners. However this number increases dramatically to over 52% for lost microchiped dogs. Lost cats have an even lower return rate at 2%, but this is increased to over 38% when microchiped cats have been brought into shelters.
With a micro-chip implant, it is important to keep your contact information and mailing address up-to-date within the database. This can be done on your own with the micro-chip company directly or through our clinic.
Have you pet microchiped today!
